About P1000 Landkreuzer set

The 12GO P1000 Landkreuzer 97050 is an impressive building set depicting one of the most extraordinary armoured vehicle concepts considered during the Second World War. The model is inspired by the German P.1000 super-heavy vehicle project, widely known by the popular name Ratte. Featuring an impressive 7,013 pieces and designed in 1:72 scale, this large construction measures approximately 54.5 cm in length, 36 cm in width and 15.6 cm in height when assembled. Its considerable size makes it a striking centrepiece for a military building collection.

The most distinctive feature of the set is its extensive hull and characteristic multi-level silhouette. The model incorporates several weapon positions, long gun barrels, a substantial central structure and numerous details across the upper deck. Large armour panels, massive side protection and an elaborate track system give the construction the appearance of an enormous land-based armoured vehicle. Its dark grey colour scheme emphasises the industrial character of the design and makes the finished build particularly suitable for display.

The construction has been designed for builders who enjoy complex projects and multi-stage assembly. The hull is built in layers, allowing the internal structure to be revealed gradually as individual sections are completed. The set includes detailed equipment and mechanical components, including interior elements, drivetrain-inspired structures and the lower chassis. Selected upper sections can be removed to provide access to the interior and reveal more of the construction.

The model also features moving components in its running gear, simulated suspension, opening and closing cabin doors, and rotating or adjustable elements on the upper structure. Detailed tracks and road wheels further emphasise the unusual scale of the vehicle. The combination of numerous modules, mechanical details and a substantial piece count makes this a challenging project for enthusiasts of large military building sets.

The 12GO P1000 Landkreuzer 97050 is primarily intended for adult collectors, military history enthusiasts and fans of unusual armoured vehicle designs. It can serve as a centrepiece in a collection of Second World War-inspired vehicles. Its considerable dimensions, unusual silhouette and abundance of construction details make it particularly eye-catching. It is also an interesting choice for anyone fascinated by experimental military concepts that never progressed beyond the design stage.

It is important to remember that the historical P.1000 was never built. The 12GO set is a contemporary brick-built interpretation of the giant land vehicle concept. Its construction details should therefore be regarded as a modelling interpretation rather than an exact reproduction of a completed historical prototype.

Historical background – The Landkreuzer P.1000 and the concept of a giant armoured vehicle

The P.1000 Landkreuzer was one of the most ambitious and controversial armoured vehicle concepts considered in Germany during the Second World War. The proposal envisioned an armoured land vehicle weighing close to 1,000 tonnes, with dimensions and weaponry that would make it resemble a battleship moving across the ground rather than a conventional tank. The concept reflected the German interest in developing increasingly heavy and heavily armed military machines, intended to achieve battlefield superiority through firepower and armour protection.

The project was associated with engineer Eduard Grote, who had previously worked on diesel engine technology and power transmission systems. In June 1942, he presented the idea of an exceptionally heavy land vehicle, and the concept attracted the interest of Adolf Hitler. During the following months, preliminary technical requirements were explored, including possible propulsion systems and weapon arrangements. The project received the designation P.1000, referring to its expected weight in tonnes.

One of the most striking aspects of the proposal was its intended naval-style artillery. Various concepts considered heavy 280 mm guns, supplemented by additional artillery and anti-aircraft positions. The number and arrangement of turrets changed during the design discussions, and several configurations were explored. Engineers also considered using multiple marine diesel engines, as conventional land vehicle powerplants could not provide the enormous output required to move such a massive machine.

The scale of the project created major engineering challenges. A vehicle weighing hundreds of tonnes would require an exceptionally strong running gear, extremely wide tracks, a large internal volume and a sophisticated power transmission system. The cooling of the engines, fuel supply, ammunition handling and operation of the heavy artillery would have presented further difficulties. A machine of this size would also have been severely restricted by roads, bridges and terrain with limited load-bearing capacity. Moving, repairing and supplying the vehicle would have required enormous logistical resources.

As the concept developed, several arrangements of weapons and structural components were considered. However, no single final engineering design emerged that could be treated as a complete production specification. It is also worth noting that the popular name "Ratte" is not conclusively established as an official designation used in the original project documentation. Nevertheless, it has become widely associated with the P.1000 in modern books and historical discussions.

The project never progressed beyond the conceptual stage and was abandoned around 1942-1943. No prototype or complete vehicle was constructed. The P.1000 therefore remains an example of extreme military design ambitions, in which the vision of overwhelming firepower collided with the practical limits of engineering, industrial production and battlefield requirements. Today, it is one of the best-known German super-heavy vehicle concepts of the Second World War and remains a fascinating subject for military model collectors.
