Historical background
The Tiger (P), also known as the VK 45.01 (P), was Ferdinand Porsche’s entry in Germany’s competition to develop a new heavy tank during the Second World War. Its design used an innovative petrol-electric drive system and differed significantly from the conventional layout developed by Henschel.
The Henschel design was selected for series production as the Tiger I. Porsche’s completed hulls and chassis were later adapted for the Ferdinand tank destroyer, subsequently known as the Elefant, making the Tiger (P) an important link in the development of Germany’s heavy armored vehicles.
