U-96 was a Type VIIC U-boat commissioned in 1940. Under commanders such as Heinrich Lehmann-Willenbrock, she completed multiple war patrols in the Battle of the Atlantic. The boat became widely known through Lothar-Günther Buchheim's novel and the film Das Boot.
